Brake Rotor Question

So I got a rotor question. The rotor on my passenger front side is warped. Finally doing something about it. However, should I go ahead and replace the rotor on the driver side as well? I’m think yes, why not when you can. But I’m wondering if that’s best practices. Also, pads are fine as well because majority of the miles are highway, like pretty much all mile are highway. And the rear rotors are peachy as well. Mustang spotted yesterday for your time. Downforce Yo!

If you have money to burn, g’head and replace both... but there really is no reason to replace one that has no issues.

Say you’re riding your brakes on highway - brakes get really hot... sluggish traffic because of rain etc... You run through a puddle with one wheel/side and water gets on the rotor. Heat shock may warp your rotor.

Replacing rotor on the other side would help keep both rotors at roughly same diameter, but other than that, there is no benefit.

if you’ve got enough metal on the rotors just get them machined.

and yes, if you need to replace one side, do the other so the wear is even.

It sounds like you're doing the work yourself. IMO, new rotors don't cost that much more than machining the old ones, so just get new rotors for both front corners.

Yeah I’m doing it. And thanks. The rotors are like 45 bucks a piece. So I’m like why not. I have an addiction having spare part around so I guess I’ll save the old rotors for some random reason.

Ideally doing all four at the same time is not a bad idea (unless it is premature wearing on one). But yeah the rotors themselves are generally rather cheap, especially if you just stick with solid non-slotted/drilled rotors. The only problem is just the time it takes to get some older/higher mileage ones off of there. Rather than having to do the other rotors soon thereafter (its a regular wear part) might as well just do all four.

Figured I need to. Thanks. The problem is that I’m working 11-12 hour days and because I stay outside of town no one in town is open when I get off. So yeah, figured just buy them.

Thanks. I got the money to burn. It’s cheap.

I usually do. If you need to go machine rotors, put on spare rotors and drive to where machining is done. no need for someone to drive you.

To be honest, the concept that people think about doing just one side is rather new to me. I’ve always replaced both sides when it comes to brakes, tires etc....

In this situation, I usually do rotors and pads together. Because honestly, my labor is valuable and I don’t want to be messing with the pads again in just a year or two if I can get it all done now. I suffer from DIY deja vu, I hate feeling like I'm doing the same job over and over again. As far as turning rotors, I've never had it done in my life. Usually the cost was nearly the same as a new rotor, and the rotor thickness was already getting pretty low — a lot of modern rotors are designed to wear along with the pads (in the old days, rotors were harder and pads were softer).

Make sure you put on new pads too. Your old ones will be grooved and worn to match the worn rotors. Also don’t forget to do a break in procedure!

It doesn’t matter if “wear is even” on rotors as long as they are still thick enough they work the same. How do you know it’s the passenger side that's bad?

I wonder how only one side got warped in the first place? Over-torqued lug nuts on the one side, maybe?

Brake rotors don’t warp. You should replace both. Don’t forget to clean the rotors well and bed in the new pads to ensure a long life.

Some reading on brake rotors “warping”. Also bedding procedure at bottom.

Also if it is only one side, make sure you try to figure out why. My guess is a sticky slider pin. Get some silicone lube and make sure they are well lubricated.

It is easier to explain it that way to a customer who only cares about what it will cost them. As an enthusiast, who is interested in why things are happening and how to prevent that in the future and also to maximize proformance. I find the details to be indispensable for future decision making. But to me my cars are more than just appliances, even my daily.

When it was repoed from the first owner.

I’d describe it as “the bastard wobbles” during hard braking “warped". I’ve replaced a bad hub bearing, a lower control arm, and everything else checks out. Thought it was a sticky caliper, but may need to check that out later. The car was repoed, it wasn’t on the Carfax and couldn’t find any information at purchase either. So hopefully this fixes it.

Me too, and I do the same. It’s just that every time I hear the internet screaming that rotors don’t warp it makes me want to scream. It annoys me more than it reasonably should, I admit. Even aside from the semantics of it, you can’t prove a negative. “You” can’t honestly tell me that you’ve done thorough scientific analysis of every type of brake rotor ever produced.

Sorry for the rant/venting. Not directed at you.
